"Bourges." This engraving presents a profile view of the city of Bourges, the historic capital of the Berry province. The composition emphasizes the city’s skyline, dominated by the massive Gothic silhouette of the Saint-Étienne Cathedral and numerous smaller church spires and towers. The urban area is depicted enclosed within its medieval defensive walls, situated behind a flat, marshy foreground that reflects the hydrological importance of the Yèvre and Auron rivers to the city's site. This work was published in Paris as part of Les Plans et Profils de Toutes les Principales Villes et Lieux Considérables de France, a comprehensive topographical atlas designed to document the administrative and geographical layout of the kingdom during the reign of Louis XIII.

Christophe Nicolas Tassin, also known as the Chevalier Tassin, was a prominent French cartographer and geographer to the King. He held a royal privilege for ten years to publish atlases that were highly valued for their portability and clear, standardized presentation of French provinces and cities. His work was instrumental in the systematic mapping of France, providing the crown and military with essential visual data on the nation's defensive and administrative regions. Tassin's style is characterized by a balance of technical clarity and decorative simplicity, making his views accessible to both state officials and the burgeoning class of intellectual collectors. His legacy remains a cornerstone of seventeenth-century French cartography, capturing the state of the realm prior to the more elaborate surveys of the later Bourbon era.
