11509 Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707–1783) – View of the Philopappos Monument in Athens – Etching (1758)

"Vue d’un Monument triomphal élevé en l’honneur de Caius Julius Antiochus Philopappus, à Athenes." This etching presents a romanticized view of the ruins of the Philopappos Monument on Mouseion Hill in Athens. The composition captures the weathered architectural details of the surviving two-story façade, including the statues of Philopappos and King Antiochus IV in their respective niches. In the foreground and middle ground, several figures in Mediterranean attire are depicted resting among the scattered stone blocks and overgrown vegetation, providing a sense of scale and a melancholic reflection on the passage of time. The background opens to a wide landscape under a vast, clouded sky, characteristic of the topographical views published in the mid-eighteenth century. This work was published in Paris as part of Julien-David Le Roy’s influential architectural survey, Les Ruines des plus beaux monuments de la Grèce.
Jacques-Philippe Le Bas was a prolific French engraver and printseller who played a major role in the development of eighteenth-century printmaking. As the Engraver to the King's Cabinet, he managed one of the most successful workshops in Paris, where he trained numerous students in the art of combining etching and engraving. He was particularly renowned for his ability to translate the atmospheric qualities of landscapes and the textures of ancient ruins onto copper plates. His collaboration with architects and explorers like Le Roy helped spark the Neoclassical movement by providing European scholars and artists with accurate yet evocative visual records of Greek antiquity. Le Bas's technical innovations and vast output made him one of the most influential figures in the dissemination of French taste and archaeological knowledge across Europe.
