11508 Edme Bouchardon (1698–1762) – View of the Fountain of the Graces – Etching (1738)

"La Fontaine des Graces." This etching presents a highly detailed design for a monumental fountain, characterized by its sophisticated blending of mythological and animalier motifs. The central structure features two slender female figures standing upon a large scallop shell, their arms raised to support a decorative urn atop a fluted pedestal. Between them, a triton emerges from the shell, while two large lions flank the base, with water spouting from their mouths. This work was published in Paris as part of the Études de figures d'après nature, a series that documented the elegant and highly influential neoclassical designs of the mid-eighteenth century. The plate reflects the grace and technical precision that defined the French royal style during the transition toward Neoclassicism.
Edme Bouchardon was a preeminent French sculptor and draughtsman who served as the King's Sculptor to Louis XV. After winning the Prix de Rome and spending nearly a decade in Italy, he returned to Paris to become one of the most celebrated artists of his generation. He is best known for his monumental public works, such as the Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons in Paris, which established a new standard for urban sculpture. Bouchardon was a master of the neoclassical style, characterized by a return to the simplicity and grandeur of antique models while maintaining a distinctly French sense of refinement. His prolific output of drawings and etchings served as essential models for contemporary craftsmen and influenced the decorative arts across Europe.
