11461 Robert Benard (1734–1777) – View of Specialized Fishing Hooks and Tools – Engraving (1778)

"Peches aux Hamecons, Hains &c." This engraving provides a detailed technical study of specific fishing implements used during the eighteenth century. The central focus is a large, specialized iron hook attached to a heavy rope with intricate knots and reinforced bindings. To the left, a stone sinker is shown secured with cordage, alongside a sharp wooden or metal stake. To the right, a multi-barbed grappling tool is depicted, featuring feathered or fibrous lures designed for maritime use. This plate was published in Paris as part of the Recueil de Planches for the Encyclopedie of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. It serves as a meticulous record of the handmade tools and traditional knot-tying techniques essential to the commercial and artisanal fishing trades during the Enlightenment.
