"S' Annelant." This topographical engraving provides a detailed coastal view of the village and harbor of Sint Annaland on the island of Tholen. The composition features the village church at the center of the skyline, with houses lining the waterfront and a windmill positioned to the right. In the foreground, several sailing vessels navigate the tidal waters, while two decorative coats of arms flank a central title banner in the sky. This print was published in the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland in Middelburg by Johannes Meertens, serving as a significant historical document of the maritime and urban geography of the Zeeland province during the late seventeenth century.
Mattheus Smallegange was a distinguished Dutch historian and genealogist who dedicated several decades to recording the history of Zeeland. His primary achievement, the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, is a monumental work that remains a vital primary source for the study of the province's past. Smallegange worked with skilled engravers to create hundreds of plates depicting towns, castles, and noble estates, often funded by the local aristocracy to celebrate their holdings. Despite his immense scholarly contribution, he struggled with the financial burden of his ambitious publishing projects throughout his life.
