His most celebrated work, the Bilderbuch fur Kinder, was issued in twelve volumes between 1790 and 1830 and featured hundreds of copperplate engravings. Bertuch is credited with pioneering the use of high-quality illustrations in children's literature to foster a better understanding of science and nature.
