11399 George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon – Natural History Study of the Macaque and Egret Monkey – Hand-coloured lithograph (19th Century)

"Le Macaque" and "L'Aigrette" presents a comparative zoological study of two primate species. The upper figure illustrates a crab-eating macaque perched on a branch, extending its arms toward a piece of fruit. The lower figure depicts the "Egret Monkey" ( a juvenile or variant of the long-tailed macaque), shown in a seated posture on a rocky base with its characteristic crest of hair visible on the crown of its head. This hand-coloured lithograph was produced by the printer de Burggraaff in Brussels and published by Th. Lejeune. The work is based on the scientific observations and systematic classifications of the Comte de Buffon for a mid-nineteenth-century natural history series.
George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a preeminent French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist whose work profoundly influenced the field of natural history. His massive encyclopedia, Histoire Naturelle, aimed to document everything known about the natural world in a systematic and accessible manner. Although he was not the illustrator of this specific plate, his extensive descriptions of animal behavior and anatomy provided the scientific foundation for generations of zoological artists. Buffon's theories on the development and distribution of species were central to the Enlightenment's understanding of biology and served as a precursor to later evolutionary thought.
