11398 George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon – Natural History Study of the Douc – Hand-coloured lithograph (19th Century)

"Le Douc" and "Le Douc vu par le dos" presents a comparative zoological study of the red-shanked douc langur (Pygathrix nemaeus). The upper figure illustrates the primate in a seated pose on a branch, highlighting its characteristic "five-coloured" appearance, including a golden-brown face, grey body, and distinctive reddish-brown legs. The lower figure depicts the animal from a posterior perspective, showcasing the tail and the contrasting coloration of the dorsal fur. This hand-coloured lithograph was produced by the printer de Burggraaff in Brussels and published by Th. Lejeune. The work is based on the scientific observations and systematic classifications of the Comte de Buffon for a mid-nineteenth-century natural history series.
George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a preeminent French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist whose work profoundly influenced the field of natural history. His massive encyclopedia, Histoire Naturelle, aimed to document everything known about the natural world in a systematic and accessible manner. Although he was not the illustrator of this specific plate, his extensive descriptions of animal behavior and anatomy provided the scientific foundation for generations of zoological artists. Buffon's theories on the development and distribution of species were central to the Enlightenment's understanding of biology and served as a precursor to later evolutionary thought.
