"L'Hyène" and "La Civette" presents a comparative zoological study of two carnivorous mammals. The upper figure illustrates a Striped Hyena in a standing lateral pose, detailing its characteristic sloping back and vertical mane of hair. The lower figure depicts a Civet, showcasing its elongated body, dark spotted coat, and distinctive facial markings. This hand-coloured lithograph was produced by the printer de Burggraaff in Brussels and published by Th. Lejeune. The work is based on the scientific observations and systematic classifications of the Comte de Buffon for a mid-nineteenth-century natural history series.
George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a preeminent French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist whose work profoundly influenced the field of natural history. His massive encyclopedia, Histoire Naturelle, aimed to document everything known about the natural world in a systematic and accessible manner. Although he was not the illustrator of this specific plate, his extensive descriptions of animal behavior and anatomy provided the scientific foundation for generations of zoological artists. Buffon's theories on the development and distribution of species were central to the Enlightenment's understanding of biology and served as a precursor to later evolutionary thought.
