11392 George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon – Ornithological Study of the Guiana Creeper and Wall Creeper – Hand-coloured lithograph (19th Century)

"Le petit Grimpereau de la Guyanne" and "Le Grimpereau de Muraille" presents a comparative ornithological study of two climbing bird species. The upper figure illustrates the Guiana Creeper perched upon a mossy branch, showcasing its green and iridescent plumage. The lower figure depicts the Wall Creeper clinging to a stone architectural element, highlighting its grey body and the striking crimson patches on its wings. This hand-coloured lithograph was produced by the printer de Burggraaff in Brussels and published by Th. Lejeune. The work is inspired by the scientific observations of the Comte de Buffon and was intended for a mid-nineteenth century educational series on natural history.
George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a preeminent French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist whose work profoundly influenced the field of natural history. His massive encyclopedia, Histoire Naturelle, aimed to document everything known about the natural world in a systematic and accessible manner. Although he was not the illustrator of this specific plate, his extensive descriptions of bird behavior and anatomy provided the scientific foundation for generations of ornithological artists. Buffon's theories on the development and distribution of species were central to the Enlightenment's understanding of biology and served as a precursor to later evolutionary thought.
