11379 George Shaw (1751–1813) – Harlequin Angler – Engraving (1804)

"Harlequin Angler" presents a natural history study of the species Histrio histrio, a member of the frogfish family known for its camouflaged appearance. The work illustrates the fish in profile, highlighting its unique anatomical features, including the globular body, fleshy limb-like pectoral fins, and the distinctive illicium or "fishing rod" appendage above the mouth used to lure prey. The surface of the fish is rendered with meticulous line work and dark, irregular patterning to represent the mottled skin and weed-like filaments that assist in its concealment within sargassum. This engraving was published in London on June 1, 1804, by G. Kearsley as part of General Zoology, or Systematic Natural History, a comprehensive multi-volume survey of the animal kingdom.
George Shaw was an English botanist and zoologist who served as the keeper of the Natural History Department at the British Museum. He was a co-founder of the Linnean Society and dedicated much of his career to the formal description and classification of various animal species, particularly those being discovered in Australia and other distant regions. His systematic approach and extensive publications provided an essential scientific framework for early nineteenth-century zoology. Shaw was instrumental in introducing numerous species to the European scientific community through his meticulous and highly detailed descriptive works.
