11378 George Shaw (1751–1813) – Natural History Study of Trunk-Fish – Engraving (1804)
"Biaculeated Trunk-Fish" and "Horned Trunk-Fish" presents a comparative zoological study of two species within the family Ostraciidae. The upper figure, the Biaculeated Trunk-Fish (Lactoria cornuta), is depicted with its characteristic box-like body covered in a hexagonal pattern of spots, while the lower figure, the Horned Trunk-Fish, showcases the prominent pre-orbital spines that give the species its name. Both specimens are illustrated in profile with meticulous line work to define their rigid, armored carapaces and delicate fin structures. This engraving was published in London on June 1, 1804, by G. Kearsley as part of General Zoology, or Systematic Natural History, a comprehensive multi-volume survey of the animal kingdom.
George Shaw was an English botanist and zoologist who served as the keeper of the Natural History Department at the British Museum. He was a co-founder of the Linnean Society and dedicated much of his career to the formal description and classification of various animal species, particularly those being discovered in Australia and other distant regions. His systematic approach and extensive publications provided an essential scientific framework for early nineteenth-century zoology. Shaw was instrumental in introducing numerous species to the European scientific community through his meticulous and highly detailed descriptive works.
