11369 Bernard Montfaucon (1655–1741) – Architectural Study of a Circular Mausoleum – Engraving (18th Century)

"Mausolees" presents a detailed architectural analysis of a cylindrical classical funerary monument. The upper portion of the plate features a perspective view of the massive stone structure, which is characterized by a crenelated roofline and an exterior base decorated with inscribed stone tablets and small columns. The lower section provides a geometric ground plan of the monument, illustrating the perfectly circular interior chamber and the substantial thickness of the surrounding masonry walls. This copper engraving was published in the monumental series L'antiquite expliquee et representee en figures in Paris.
Bernard Montfaucon was a French Benedictine monk and pioneering scholar of the Maurist congregation who is considered one of the founders of modern archaeology. He dedicated his life to the study of primary sources and ancient monuments, aiming to provide a comprehensive visual history of the classical world. His most famous work, a multi-volume encyclopedic set, documented thousands of artifacts and architectural ruins, remaining a standard reference for historians throughout the eighteenth century. Montfaucon's methodical approach to classifying material culture and structures significantly advanced the field of paleography and the preservation of historical knowledge.
