"Polynesia Nuku Hiva" depicts an indigenous village on the island of Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. The composition features traditional thatched dwellings and several large carved stone tiki figures arranged along a stone wall within a tropical landscape of palm trees and exotic flora. This hand-coloured copper engraving was published in the Bilderbuch fur Kinder, a landmark multi-volume educational series printed in Weimar. 

Friedrich Justin Bertuch was a prominent German publisher and man of letters who established the Weimar Industry and Literature Bureau. He is best known for creating high-quality illustrated pedagogical works that aimed to provide children with a comprehensive understanding of world geography, natural history, and diverse cultures. His encyclopedia was a revolutionary achievement in Enlightenment-era publishing and remained a standard reference for decades.
