"Montserrat" presents a landscape view of the famous serrated mountain range and monastery near Barcelona, Spain. The work depicts the characteristic jagged rock formations and the architectural complex nestled into the cliffside, with a solitary figure walking along a path in the foreground. This hand-coloured copper engraving was published in the Bilderbuch fur Kinder, a landmark educational series produced in Weimar. 

Friedrich Justin Bertuch was a German publisher and writer who pioneered the development of illustrated educational materials for youth. His multi-volume pictorial encyclopedia was designed to provide a comprehensive visual survey of the natural world, geography, and human inventions, significantly influencing pedagogical practices in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
