This woodcut, numbered 356 and titled De Composito Ordine, illustrates two complex geometric patterns intended as models for architectural elements such as flooring, coffered ceilings, or parterre garden layouts associated with the Composite order. The designs feature precise arrangements of intersecting rectilinear and circular shapes. The print originates from the influential architectural treatise, Tutte l'opere d'architettura. Sebastiano Serlio was an important Italian Mannerist architect, painter, and theorist. He is primarily known for his seven-book architectural treatise, which was the first systematic codification of the classical architectural orders, profoundly influencing architecture in Italy, France, and England.
