This large, hand-colored copperplate engraving is a significant geographical map detailing the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, encompassing the historical territories of Livonia (modern Latvia and Estonia), Lithuania, and parts of Poland and Russia. The map meticulously records political boundaries, rivers, towns, and topographical features like forests. A prominent, ornate cartouche with a colorful coat of arms is situated in the upper left corner. This important map was published as part of the influential Mercator-Hondius Atlas series, which served as a primary cartographic reference throughout the 17th century.

Gerardus Mercator was a Flemish cartographer, cosmographer, and geographer of the 16th century who revolutionized navigation by developing the Mercator projection. He is widely recognized for publishing the first collection of maps under the name Atlas, Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes.
