This large, double-folio copperplate engraving presents a dramatic reconstruction of a Roman Naumachia (naval battle spectacle), as hypothesized by the scholar Onofrio Panvinius. The image depicts a vast, circular amphitheater, flooded to accommodate numerous Roman galleys and smaller boats actively engaged in mock combat, surrounded by tiers of spectators. The print details the monumental architecture of the arena, including arcades and entrances, and was included in a major work of classical scholarship published by François Halma to visualize the grand scale of Roman spectacles.

François Halma was a significant Dutch publisher and bookseller who operated during the late 17th and early 18th centuries in Utrecht and Leiden. Although primarily a publisher, he oversaw the production of numerous works of historical and biblical geography. His firm was known for producing large, detailed copperplate maps included in scholarly Bibles and comprehensive historical atlases.
