This engraving depicts two distinct topographical views and architectural studies of the Mausoleum of Augustus in Rome, presented in a stacked composition. The upper panel provides an architectural reconstruction of the monumental tomb as a grand, multi-tiered circular structure adorned with classical statuary, obelisks, and rows of cypress trees. The lower panel, titled Mausolei Vestigia, illustrates the weathered remains of the structure as it appeared in the artist's time, showing the circular masonry core repurposed with later internal modifications. In the foreground, a classically draped female figure sits among architectural ruins, holding a tablet and resting her hand on a sculpted portrait head, which serves to ground the archaeological study in a contemplative and allegorical context. These illustrations were likely created for a scholarly treatise on Roman antiquities, utilizing the refined linework and complex framing characteristic of late Dutch Baroque printmaking.

Jan Goeree was a prolific Dutch engraver, painter, and poet active in Amsterdam. A student of Gerard de Lairesse, he became one of the most sought-after book illustrators of his time, providing hundreds of designs for historical, classical, and scientific publications. His work is noted for its adherence to neoclassical principles, featuring elegant figures and balanced compositions that bridged the late Baroque and early Enlightenment styles. Goeree’s contributions significantly influenced the visual presentation of scholarly literature in the Netherlands during the early eighteenth century.
