10352 Jan Goeree (1670–1731) – Topographical Views of the Aerarium and Temple of Saturn – Engraving (1700–1730)

This engraving depicts two distinct topographical views and architectural studies related to the Aerarium and the Temple of Saturn in Rome, presented in a stacked composition. The upper panel, titled Aerarium, provides an architectural reconstruction of the Roman treasury as a grand neoclassical structure with a domed roof, a central arched portal, and niches containing figurative statues. The lower panel, titled Vestigia aedis Saturni cum aerario, illustrates the surviving ruins of the site within a contemporary urban landscape, featuring the weathered masonry of the temple alongside later residential buildings and small street figures. The central space between the views is filled with allegorical and classical objects, including two standing nude male figures flanking the upper scene, ancient coins, a portrait medallion, and a large decorative urn. These illustrations were likely created for a scholarly treatise on Roman antiquities, utilizing the refined linework and complex allegorical framing characteristic of late Dutch Baroque printmaking.
Jan Goeree was a prolific Dutch engraver, painter, and poet active in Amsterdam. A student of Gerard de Lairesse, he became one of the most sought-after book illustrators of his time, providing hundreds of designs for historical, classical, and scientific publications. His work is noted for its adherence to neoclassical principles, featuring elegant figures and balanced compositions that bridged the late Baroque and early Enlightenment styles. Goeree’s contributions significantly influenced the visual presentation of scholarly literature in the Netherlands during the early eighteenth century.
