Matthäus Merian was a Swiss-born engraver, draftsman, and publisher who worked primarily in Frankfurt. He became one of the most prolific and most important publishers of his era, best known for his immense series of topographical volumes, the Topographia Germaniae, and his numerous illustrated Bibles. His highly detailed city views and maps established a critical visual record of 17th-century Europe.
