11250 George Shaw (1751–1813) – Aranea – engraving (1806)

"Aranea" is an intricate black and white engraving depicting various species of spiders, including the Tarantula, Diadema, and Aquatica. Each specimen is rendered with scientific precision, capturing the unique markings, limb structures, and anatomical proportions of the arachnids. This plate was published in London on October 1, 1806, by G. Kearsley as part of George Shaw’s monumental work, General Zoology, or Systematic Natural History. The work served as one of the most comprehensive zoological surveys of the early nineteenth century, aiming to categorize the animal kingdom according to the Linnaean system while providing high-quality visual documentation for scholars and collectors alike.
George Shaw was a distinguished english botanist and zoologist who served as the keeper of the Natural History Department at the British Museum. He was a co-founder of the Linnean Society and a prolific author, known for his ability to describe new and exotic species brought back from global expeditions, including the first scientific description of the platypus. His major contribution, General Zoology, spanned fourteen volumes and featured thousands of detailed engravings. Shaw’s work was instrumental in popularizing natural history in Great Britain during the Georgian era, combining academic rigor with accessible, finely executed illustrations.
