9854 Gerardus Mercator (1512–1594) – Map of the Duchy of Brittany (Duché de Bretagne) – Brittany, France – Hand-colored copperplate engraving (17th Century)

This large, hand-colored copperplate engraving presents a detailed map of the Duchy of Brittany, a major peninsula in Northwestern France. The map meticulously delineates the regional divisions, cities, towns, and the rugged coastline bordering the Ocean Occidental. The engraving is highly decorative, featuring a large, ornate cartouche with the coat of arms and title, along with mythical sea monsters and several sailing vessels populating the adjacent waters. This map was published as part of the influential Mercator-Hondius Atlas series, which was the premier cartographic reference during the 17th century.
Gerardus Mercator was a Flemish cartographer, cosmographer, and geographer of the 16th century who revolutionized navigation by developing the Mercator projection. He is widely recognized for publishing the first collection of maps under the name Atlas, Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes. His meticulous and accurate mapping became the foundation for European cartography for generations, forming the basis of many subsequent atlas publications.
