DescriptionThis exquisite print is from the largest reference work of the Enlightenment, the 196-volume 'Tableau Encyclopédique et Méthodique des Trois Règnes de la Nature', published in Paris between 1789 and 1832. French naturalist, professor, and priest Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre (1752-1804) was commissioned by the publisher Panckoucke to edit the sections on zoology. To illustrate the ichthyology volume, Bonnaterre copied everything available from Bloch’s masterpiece and works by eminent authors such as Catesby, Willughby, Rondelet, and Salviani, assembling a collection of over 400 wonderful species. DescriptionThis hand-coloured woodcut originates from ”Historia animalium” ("History of the Animals"), published in Zurich in 1551–1558 and 1587, is an encyclopedic "inventory of renaissance zoology" by Conrad Gessner (1516–1565). This Gessner’s ’work is considered the start of modern zoology in the West and it was the most widely read of all the Renaissance natural history books. The illustrations in 'Historia animalium' are very naturalistic compared to those found in Medieval bestiaries and printed copies of the Physiologus. Place and year of publication: Zurich, Switzerland, 1617. DescriptionAntique engraving originates from "Lumen Picturae: A Classical Drawing Manual" by Frederick de Wit. The work has a watermark on the reverse. "Lumen Picturae..." was first published in Amsterdam between 1660 and 1675, "Lumen Picturae" is a lavishly illustrated guide to classical figurative drawing as taught in the Dutch Golden Age. It is an excellent introduction to 17th Century aesthetics, as well as a useful guide for any artist to learn the basic principles of composition. Each page provides a step-by-step tutorial to drawing the human figure (breaking it down into heads, hands, feet, anatomy, and then reassembling them into full figures), as well as animal forms (quadrupeds, birds, and mythological creatures). Because this manual is presented without any words beyond the introduction, "Lumen Picturae" evokes a classical learning style based in the timeless tradition of copying the great masters of yesteryear.
