DescriptionThis originally hand-coloured engraving is from Johann Leonhard Frisch's&nbsp;Vorstellung der Vogel in Teutschland und Beylaugffig auch Einiger Fremden, mit Ihren Eigenschaften Beschrieben…und Nach Iheren Naturlichen Farben. The work was completed by his son Jodocus Leopold in 1763 and published by Friedrich Wilhelm Birnstiel in Berlin. Johann Leonhard Frisch led a varied career including being a singer, minister, interpreter for the German army, and a headmaster at a Berlin school. His academic pursuits interested him in natural history and to form a Cabinet of Curiosities from which the illustrations for the work were often drawn. Frisch is credited by some with the discovery of the colour 'Prussian blue', and was responsible for the planting of mulberries on the ramparts of Berlin in a successful attempt to produce silk. DescriptionAntique engraving originates from "Lumen Picturae: A Classical Drawing Manual" by Frederick de Wit. The work has a watermark on the reverse. "Lumen Picturae..." was first published in Amsterdam between 1660 and 1675, "Lumen Picturae" is a lavishly illustrated guide to classical figurative drawing as taught in the Dutch Golden Age. It is an excellent introduction to 17th Century aesthetics, as well as a useful guide for any artist to learn the basic principles of composition. Each page provides a step-by-step tutorial to drawing the human figure (breaking it down into heads, hands, feet, anatomy, and then reassembling them into full figures), as well as animal forms (quadrupeds, birds, and mythological creatures). DescriptionThis hand-coloured woodcut originates from ”Historia animalium” ("History of the Animals"), published in Zurich in 1551–1558 and 1587, is an encyclopedic "inventory of renaissance zoology" by Conrad Gessner (1516–1565). This Gessner’s ’work is considered the start of modern zoology in the West and it was the most widely read of all the Renaissance natural history books. The illustrations in 'Historia animalium' are very naturalistic compared to those found in Medieval bestiaries and printed copies of the Physiologus. DescriptionA Plan of the Town of Payta in the Kingdom of Santa-Fee. Detailed plan of PAITA, in northern Peru, a key stop for the Spanish treasure galleons sailing north from the port of Callao (Lima) to Acapulco. By the English pirate (‘Baron’) George Anson. Published in 1749, description of his around the world voyage from 1740-1744. From ‘Voyage Autour de Monde’. Amsterdam, copper plate engraved. His ‘mission’ was to attack Spanish territories in western South America and engage and loot Spanish treasure galleons. If caught the Spanish would have convicted him of piracy and executed him and his crew. A different undertaking in which he lost two thirds of his crew and three of his six ships, leaving only 335 crew for the remaining voyage. His determined efforts finally saw major success when the larger and better armed Spanish treasure galleon ‘Nuestra Senora de Cobadonga’ was captured in 1743 off cape Espiritu Santo, Samar island of the Philippines. Eventually only one ship, his flags the ‘Centurion’ and just 125 crewmen remained when they returned to England in 1744.
