9903 Friedrich Johann Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) - Tropical Fruits - Hand-colored Engraving (Early 19th Century)
This hand-colored engraving depicts several examples of tropical fruits. The plate features a large, green, spiny breadfruit or jackfruit in the center left, two small yellow pear-shaped fruits, and a branch illustrating a large brown nut. The composition also includes the flowers and foliage of the plants. The plate was created for Bertuch's encyclopedic work, Bilderbuch für Kinder.
Friedrich Johann Justin Bertuch was a German publisher, naturalist, and writer. He is renowned for conceiving and editing the Bilderbuch für Kinder, an illustrated encyclopedia intended to educate children about natural history, science, geography, and culture through highly detailed copperplate engravings.
