9900 Friedrich Johann Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) - Six Species of Owls - Hand-colored Engraving (Late 18th Century)

This hand-colored engraving depicts six different species of owls perched on various branches. The central figure is a large European Eagle-Owl, surrounded by smaller, distinct species of nocturnal birds of prey. The plate is identified as Vogel V. and was created for Bertuch's famous encyclopedic work, Bilderbuch für Kinder.
Friedrich Johann Justin Bertuch was a German publisher, naturalist, and writer. He is renowned for conceiving and editing the Bilderbuch für Kinder, an illustrated encyclopedia intended to educate children about natural history, science, geography, and culture through highly detailed copperplate engravings.
