9890 William Curtis (1746–1799) - Botanical Illustration Xeranthemum genus - Hand-colored Engraving (1804)

This hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts a plant from the Xeranthemum genus with three large flower heads and densely packed foliage. The flower heads are distinguished by white and purple petals surrounding a dark yellow central disk. The illustration was published by I. Curtis for The Botanical Magazine. William Curtis was an English botanist and entomologist best known for founding the influential publication The Botanical Magazine, which featured high-quality hand-colored illustrations of exotic and familiar plants. Though he died in 1799, the magazine continued under his name and influence for many years.
