9845 Bernard de Montfaucon (1655–1741) – The God Anubis and Greco-Egyptian Deities – Copperplate engraving (c. 1719–1724)

This copperplate engraving presents a scholarly plate documenting the syncretic iconography of the Greco-Egyptian deity Anubis (or Hermanubis). The central, large figure is shown with the head of a jackal or dog and a muscular human body in classical dress, resting a foot on a crocodile, and surrounded by symbols like a feather and a serpent staff (caduceus). Below the main figure are smaller engravings reproducing ancient coins and statues featuring related jackal-headed and dog-headed divine figures. This illustration was published in Bernard de Montfaucon's authoritative L'Antiquité Expliquée et Représentée en Figures, detailing the fusion of Egyptian and Classical religious forms.
Bernard de Montfaucon was a revered French Benedictine monk and scholar considered one of the founders of modern archaeology and paleography. His monumental ten-volume work, L'Antiquité Expliquée et Représentée en Figures, was the first systematic attempt to comprehensively illustrate and catalog the surviving material culture of the classical world, profoundly influencing Enlightenment-era research and the study of ancient iconography and artifacts.
