9837 Bernard de Montfaucon (1655–1741) – Abraxas, Gnostic Figures, and Inscriptions – Copperplate engraving (c. 1719–1724)

This copperplate engraving presents a scholarly collection of engravings documenting the iconography of Gnostic gems and talismans from antiquity. The plate features several representations of the syncretic deity Abraxas, including a full-length figure with a snake coiled around the neck, as well as various forms of symbolic figures and magical inscriptions such as the palindrome ABRACAZ. The composition is designed to compare different visual and textual traditions related to Gnostic belief systems, published as part of Bernard de Montfaucon's authoritative work on classical archaeology.
Bernard de Montfaucon was a revered French Benedictine monk and scholar considered one of the founders of modern archaeology and paleography. His monumental ten-volume work, L'Antiquité Expliquée et Représentée en Figures, was the first systematic attempt to comprehensively illustrate and catalog the surviving material culture of the classical world, profoundly influencing Enlightenment-era research and the study of ancient iconography and artifacts.
