9828 William Curtis (1746–1799) – Bulbous Plant with White Flowers – Hand-colored copperplate engraving (18th Century)
This hand-colored copperplate engraving presents a large-scale botanical study of a bulbous plant, a species of Star-of-Bethlehem, shown with its entire structure intact. The illustration clearly depicts the large, globular bulb, several thick basal leaves, and a tall, dense spire of white, star-shaped flowers with prominent yellow and green markings. The scale and meticulous detail of this print are consistent with those published in comprehensive floras by William Curtis, such as Flora Londinensis.
William Curtis was an eminent English botanist, entomologist, and publisher of the 18th Century. He is celebrated for founding two of the most significant botanical publications of the time: the magnificent folio Flora Londinensis and the long-running Curtis's Botanical Magazine. Curtis was dedicated to popularizing botany and established a well-known botanical garden in London for public instruction.
