This copperplate engraving provides a detailed profile of the Elk, or Moose, shown walking on a naturalistic ground line. The illustration captures the animal's massive size, the hump above its shoulders, and its characteristic palmate antlers. The title notes the specimen originated from the Leverian Museum, indicating its source as a scientifically verified specimen from one of the most celebrated natural history collections in early 19th-century London. The print was included in George Shaw's comprehensive General Zoology.
George Shaw was an eminent English zoologist and botanist, serving as a lecturer at Oxford and the Keeper of Natural History at the British Museum. He was a foundational member of the Linnean Society of London.
