9810 George Shaw (1751–1813) – Giraffe – Copperplate engraving (c. 1800–1805)

This copperplate engraving provides a detailed profile of the Giraffe, the tallest living terrestrial animal, shown standing on a sparse ground line. The illustration is finely executed to capture the characteristic spotted coat pattern and emphasize the animal's striking proportions, including its long neck and legs. This scientific print was created for George Shaw's comprehensive General Zoology, or Systematic Natural History, a work vital to the dissemination of zoological knowledge in the early 19th century.
George Shaw was an eminent English zoologist and botanist, serving as a lecturer at Oxford and the Keeper of Natural History at the British Museum. He was a foundational member of the Linnean Society of London. Shaw is best known for publishing and writing the text for two monumental illustrated works, The Naturalist's Miscellany and General Zoology, both of which were pivotal in documenting newly discovered species for European science.
