This print illustrates a moralizing allegory The Difference Between, with the subject matter contrasting Love (Cupid) and Death (a skeleton). The central engraving depicts the winged figure of Cupid on the left, engaged in a confrontation or interaction with the skeletal figure of Death on the right, who is seated and holding a scythe. This leaf was published in a major Dutch emblem.

Jacob Cats was a famous Dutch poet, jurist, and moralist whose books, known as emblem books, were enormously popular and provided these illustrated moral lessons for a broad audience. While he was the author of the text and moral concepts, his name is the central attribution associated with the work's creation and publication, consistent with his widely circulated emblems.
