9042 Bernard de Montfaucon (1655–1741) – Andabatae and Dimachaeri Gladiators – Engraving (1704)

This print illustrates two specialized types of Roman gladiators. The upper panel depicts Andabatae, who fought on horseback with lances and wore helmets without eye-holes, forcing them to fight blindly. The lower panel shows Dimachaeri, who fought on foot armed with two swords ("Di-machaeri" meaning "two swords"). The scenes are set outdoors against a hilly landscape, emphasizing the combat in a historical context. This engraving was produced for an illustrated volume dedicated to Roman games and combat, which was part of Bernard de Montfaucon's scholarly work on classical antiquity, published in Amsterdam.
Bernard de Montfaucon was an influential French Benedictine monk and a founding figure in modern archaeology and paleography. His key contribution was the monumental, ten-volume illustrated encyclopedia, "L'Antiquité expliquée et representée en figures," which systematically documented countless classical artifacts, monuments, and aspects of ancient life, including military, social, and gaming customs.
