9032 Bernard de Montfaucon (1655–1741) – Urnes Sepulcrales (Sepulchral Urns) – Engraving (1724)

This print depicts two examples of Roman sepulchral urns, or funerary monuments, featuring inscriptions and decorative elements. The upper illustration shows an elaborately carved urn flanked by standing figures, while the lower image shows a simpler, draped altar-style monument. These engravings served as detailed archaeological documentation for Bernard de Montfaucon’s seminal work, "L'Antiquité expliquée et representée en figures" (Antiquity Explained and Represented in Figures), a major source for classical studies in the eighteenth century.
Bernard de Montfaucon was a highly influential French Benedictine monk of the Maurist Congregation and a pioneering figure in the fields of paleography and archaeology. His chief contribution was the massive ten-volume illustrated catalogue, "L'Antiquité expliquée," which meticulously documented classical artifacts, sculpture, architecture, and daily life, establishing a foundation for the systematic study of ancient visual culture.
