This topographical print is Cathedral of Guayaquil). The scene depicts the Cathedral and surrounding square of Guayaquil, Ecuador. The low-slung, whitewashed church building, flanked by two square bell towers, is central to the image. It is framed by wooden colonial-style buildings with prominent balconies (mirrored in the foreground left), characteristic of tropical port architecture. Several figures are shown in the square, giving a sense of scale and daily activity.
Barthélémy Lauvergne was a French landscape and marine painter who served as one of the official artists on the circumnavigation commanded by Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant (1836–1837). His drawings and watercolors from these voyages provided invaluable visual documentation of ports, cities, and coastal landscapes across the globe, which were then reproduced as engravings and lithographs for the official published accounts, often in collaboration with other artists like Théodore Fisquet.
