The scene depicts the moment of initial European contact between Captain Cook's landing party and the indigenous inhabitants of the island of Mallicollo (Malakula in modern Vanuatu) in the South Pacific. European figures in naval attire, including Cook and his officers, stand in a large longboat meeting a group of unclothed indigenous men gathered on the shore beneath a dense cover of trees. The scene documents an event observed during Captain Cook's Second Voyage. The original drawing was by William Hodges.

William Hodges was an English painter and illustrator best known for serving as the official artist on Captain James Cook's Second Voyage (1772–1775) to the Pacific. His topographical drawings and ethnographic scenes provided the first visual record of many Pacific islands, including the New Hebrides. His work was crucial for illustrating the published accounts of Cook's voyages.
