The scene depicts a desolate, dramatic coastal landscape of the sub-Antarctic island, featuring rugged, snow-capped mountains and rocky shores bordering a bay. The view emphasizes the remote, glacial environment discovered during exploration. A group of figures, possibly explorers or animals, is faintly visible in the mid-ground. The scene documents the landscape encountered during Captain Cook's Second Voyage. The original drawing was by William Hodges, and the engraving is signed by R. Scott.

William Hodges was an English painter and illustrator best known for serving as the official artist on Captain James Cook's Second Voyage (1772–1775) to the Pacific and Southern Oceans. His topographical drawings and paintings provided the first European images of many remote and previously uncharted territories, including South Georgia. His work was crucial for illustrating the published accounts of Cook's voyages.
