This topographical print is a City of Chau-cheu fu, or Chaozhou, and Nienhod. It depicts a panoramic view of a large Asian city, identified as Chaozhou nestled against a dramatic backdrop of steep, craggy mountains (karst topography). The city is shown along a river or estuary, featuring dense buildings, a prominent pagoda or tower, and several boats in the foreground, including one large ship dominating the center. This view illustrates a scene from the accounts of Jesuit missionaries or European travelers in China. This print originates from Abbé Prévost's influential encyclopedic work, Histoire Générale des Voyages.
