8980 Jakob van der Schley (1715–1779) – Cérémonie du Mariage des Incas (Inca Marriage Ceremony) – Engraving (c. 1755)

This ethnographic print is titled Cérémonie du Mariage des Incas (Inca Marriage Ceremony). The illustration depicts a group of numerous figures in a crowded setting, observing or participating in a formalized ceremony. Two figures, presumably the bride and groom, stand at the center being joined or guided by another figure. The clothing is generally simple, suggesting a focus on the action rather than elaborate dress. This print illustrates a historical or cultural practice of the Inca people. This print originates from Abbé Prévost's influential encyclopedic work, Histoire Générale des Voyages.
Jakob van der Schley was a Dutch draftsman and engraver of the 18th century. He was a prolific artist, known for illustrating a vast array of subjects for major European publications. He was the principal illustrator for Abbé Prévost's Histoire Générale des Voyages, a monumental work that synthesized global travel accounts and disseminated images of non-European cultures and histories across Europe during the Enlightenment.
