This ethnographic and topographical print depicts Boats of the Friendly Isles (the Tonga archipelago in the South Pacific). The scene is set on the water, featuring several large outrigger sailing canoes characteristic of the region, each with high, distinctive triangular sails. In the foreground, two figures paddle a small, low canoe. The dramatic sky and detailed rendering of the sea highlight the conditions encountered during Pacific exploration. The scene captures the indigenous maritime culture observed during Captain Cook's Second Voyage. The original drawing was by William Hodges, and the engraving is signed by W. Watts.

William Hodges was an English painter and illustrator best known for serving as the official artist on Captain James Cook's Second Voyage (1772–1775) to the Pacific. His topographical drawings and paintings provided the first European images of many Pacific islands, including Tonga. His work was crucial for illustrating the published accounts of Cook's voyages, documenting the landscapes, people, and maritime technology of the newly encountered regions.
