This anatomical illustration features two detailed figures relating to complex biological structures, observed under a microscope. Figure 1 on the left shows a coiled or tubular structure, highly detailed with pronounced shading, possibly representing a convoluted gland, vessel, or a magnified structure from an organ like the kidney (Malpighian corpuscle) or spleen. Figure 2 on the right shows a circular network of highly branched vessels and nodes, suggesting a magnified view of a vascular or glandular system.

Marcello Malpighi was a distinguished Italian biologist and physician who is regarded as the founder of microscopic anatomy, histology, and physiological anatomy. He made fundamental discoveries using the newly developed microscope, including the structure of the lungs, the capillaries connecting arteries and veins, and the structure of the kidneys and spleen. His work, such as De Pulmonibus (On the Lungs), fundamentally advanced the understanding of human and animal physiology.
