This print depicts an idealized formal garden rendered within a circular frame, featuring highly structured parterres, decorative fountains, and a row of beehives set near a wooden fence in the foreground left. The scene is bordered by trees and a distant landscape. This engraving comes from the 1640 edition of Jacob Cats' emblem book, Silenus Alcibiadis, Sive Proteus, for which Cats provided the moral text and themes.

Jacob Cats was a highly influential Dutch poet, humorist, and politician of the Dutch Golden Age. Known as "Father Cats," he was famous for his didactic and popular emblem books, which used illustrations and accompanying poetry to convey moral lessons, primarily focused on love, marriage, and domestic life.
