8796 Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles (Abbé Prévost) (1697–1763) – View of Galle Point (Sri Lanka) – Engraving (c. 1760)

This topographical print depicts a panoramic view of Pointe de Galle, Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The scene captures the coastline, showing the fortifications and buildings of the Dutch-controlled port town of Galle, backed by dense vegetation. In the foreground, numerous sailing ships navigate the roadstead, indicating its importance as a major naval and trading post on the route to the East Indies. The title is presented within a scroll cartouche across the sky.
Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles, generally known as the Abbé Prévost, was a highly prolific French author, historian, and cleric of the Enlightenment. Though he was primarily a writer (best known for Manon Lescaut), he was the editor and chief author of the monumental Histoire Générale des Voyages (General History of Travels, 1746–1759). This vast work compiled global travel accounts and was illustrated by hundreds of detailed maps and views, such as this one, which were mostly engraved by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin and other workshop engravers under Prévost's editorial direction.
