This topographical print depicts a panoramic coastal view of Samboupo, a location in Southeast Asia or the East Indies, based on the context of 18th-century French travel atlases. The engraving captures the town lining the shore against a backdrop of hills, with numerous sailing ships populating the foreground waters, emphasizing its function as a maritime trading port.

Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles, generally known as the Abbé Prévost, was a highly prolific French author, historian, and cleric of the Enlightenment. Though he was primarily a writer (best known for Manon Lescaut), he was the editor and chief author of the monumental Histoire Générale des Voyages (General History of Travels, 1746–1759). This vast work compiled global travel accounts and was illustrated by hundreds of detailed maps and views, such as this one, which were mostly engraved by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin and other workshop engravers under Prévost's editorial direction.
