Captain James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, and cartographer. He commanded three voyages to the Pacific Ocean (1768-1779), during which he made the first recorded European contact with eastern Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and completed the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. His expeditions revolutionized European understanding of geography.
