This delicate copperplate engraving depicts a flowering nasturtium plant entangled with two Cabbage White butterflies (Pieris rapae) and other small insects in natural motion. The graceful curvature of the stems and realistic shading of the leaves create a sense of botanical dynamism, while the insects are captured in mid-flight or repose, showing the interplay between flora and fauna

Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanical illustrator whose Phytanthoza Iconographia remains a landmark in 18th-century scientific publishing. It was the first large-scale botanical work to successfully use colour-printed mezzotint, establishing a new standard for accuracy and aesthetic quality in botanical art.
