This detailed botanical illustration, Plate 7602, depicts the magnificent orchid species Coelogyne Swaniana, native to Southeast Asia. The print captures the plant's long, arching inflorescence, featuring a cascade of delicate white and yellow blossoms suspended over the ribbed, oblong pseudobulbs and lanceolate leaves. The intricate study provides a full portrait of the plant as well as detailed anatomical sketches of the flower structure, designed to provide accurate scientific documentation. This plate was published in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, produced during the era when Joseph Dalton Hooker led the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and introduced many tropical novelties to Britain.

William Curtis was an English apothecary and botanist who founded The Botanical Magazine in 1787. Initially a demonstrator of plants at the Chelsea Physic Garden, Curtis established the magazine as an accessible and affordable vehicle for introducing exotic and ornamental plants to gardeners and botanists. Though Curtis himself died relatively early, the publication continued under a succession of editors and renowned illustrators, growing in scientific authority through its affiliation with Kew. It remains the longest continuously published and most authoritative botanical serial in history.
