179 William Curtis (1746–1799) – Botanical Study of a Showy-Flowered Begonia – Hand-coloured lithograph (Circa 1884)

This vibrant botanical illustration, designated depicts a species of Begonia characterized by its very large, richly colored green leaf and dense cluster of bright pink, five-petaled flowers. The study includes detailed anatomical insets illustrating the structure of the petals and reproductive parts. This print was published as part of Curtis's Botanical Magazine, a serial dedicated to presenting accurate figures of new and rare plants from around the world, particularly those cultivated at Kew and other major British botanical establishments.
William Curtis was an English apothecary and botanist who founded The Botanical Magazine in 1787. Initially a demonstrator of plants at the Chelsea Physic Garden, Curtis established the magazine as an accessible and affordable vehicle for introducing exotic and ornamental plants to gardeners and botanists. Though Curtis himself died relatively early, the publication continued under a succession of editors and artists—including John Sims and Sir William Jackson Hooker—to become the longest continuously published and most authoritative botanical serial in history.
